What is a vital record?

Answer

Vital records are fundamental to an organisation’s ability to function and are necessary to continue operations without delay under crisis conditions. Some vital records contain information critical to the continued operation of an organisation immediately following a crisis or natural disaster; while others may be unique and difficult or expensive to reproduce but are required in their original form to meet legal, regulatory, and operational requirements.

Please note that the vital classification is only valid for as long as they support critical business processes after which they must be reclassified as their maintenance requires specialised storage and access provisions.

The following are a few examples of vital records:

Contracts

Leases and Deeds

Policy manuals

Blueprints
